

SPRING/BREAK 2020 'IN EXCESS': David B. Frye: Milking the Golden Bull
March 4-9, 2020 | Milking the Golden Bull is an exhibition of new works by David B. Frye. A series of paintings on panel in carved wooden frames and a mechanical wood sculpture elucidate contemporary takes on the Biblical story of worshiping the golden calf. In Frye’s hands, the story grows to reflect all manner of contemporary rituals of forgetting, misplaced adoration, and greed.

July 11-27, 2019 | The artworks in CRIMINALIZE THIS! explore gender policing in its wide range of expressions—from tacit to overt, banal to insidious, simply irritating to systemically violent. The approaches and mediums are varied. In sculpture, painting, photography, video, mixed media we glimpse camp, irony, performance, and the abstracted self. There is also a notable brightness to many of the pieces in the show, reminding viewers that resistance is quite often fabulous.

David B. Frye explores alternative versions of American history in The Lincoln Paintings, a series of painted wood panels in carved wood frames. In Frye’s version of history, a sexualized world of shifting power dynamics is a counterpoint to saccharine Americana. The Lincoln Paintingsare unlimited by reality, telling a story that, while false, illustrates hard-to-place truths.
